Focus98 is made by Artifx SRL, Romania, which is responsible for your data.

The short version

Focus98 works without an account, and then nothing about you leaves your phone. If you sign up, we keep your e-mail address and your game save so you can play on any phone. We don't show ads or sell data. The app uses no tracking or analytics services; this website uses Google Analytics only if you accept cookies.

What stays on your phone

Which app is in front, how long you spend in apps, and which apps you have installed are read on your phone to block apps and count distractions. Without an account, none of it leaves your phone. With an account, your game save (below) includes the rules you set for apps and the names of the apps that distracted you during sessions, with the time spent in each, so they carry over to your other phones. The list of everything you have installed is never sent. If you give Focus98 notification access, deep-focus rounds use it only to pause blocked apps' media; it doesn't read your notifications.

What we keep if you sign up

  • Your account: your e-mail address, your password (stored only as a one-way hash), and the phone model of each phone you sign in on.
  • Your game save: credits, upgrades, tasks, round history, settings, notes, your app rules and the apps that distracted you in sessions, and a random ID for each installation (to tell your phones apart), so you can carry on on another phone.
  • FocusChat and Focus Groups, if you use them: your screen name and status, your friends list, and your messages, so they reach your friends. Your friends see when you're online, away or in a session. Your screen name and total focus time can appear on the leaderboard: to your friends always, and to everyone unless you turn that off. If you invite someone by e-mail, we keep their address until they sign up, only to connect you when they join.
  • Purchases, if you buy Plus: the Google Play purchase record (an order number and a token), to give you Plus on every phone. Your payment details stay with Google; we never see them.

Keeping FocusChat safe

Status messages and chat messages are checked automatically against word lists when you send them; refused text isn't stored, and messages aren't otherwise read unless someone reports them.

  • Reports: if you report someone, we keep your account, theirs, their screen name and status at that moment, the message you reported (if any), your reason and note, and the time. We review them to keep FocusChat safe, and keep them after either account is deleted (without the account links).
  • Blocks: who blocked whom, and when. Deleted with either account. The other person isn't told.
  • Terms: when you first agreed to the FocusChat terms.
  • Bans: if we ban an account from FocusChat and Focus Groups, we keep its ID, e-mail address, the reason and the time, including after it's deleted, so the address can't be used to come back.

Early access

If you join the early-access list on this site, we keep your e-mail address and when you joined, only to tell you when Focus98 launches. We don't share it or use it for anything else. Ask us to remove it any time, and every e-mail we send has a way to unsubscribe.

Cookies and analytics on this website

This website uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read, from roughly which country and on what kind of device. We use it only to improve the site, never for ads, and Google processes it for us under its own terms. IP addresses are not stored.

When you first visit focus98.app, we ask whether we may use analytics cookies. Google's tag is on every page, but until you press Accept it sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device; it can send Google basic, cookieless signals (such as that a page was loaded), which Google uses to estimate visits in aggregate. Only if you press Accept does it set cookies (named _ga) that recognise your browser on later visits. You can change your choice any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page; declining after accepting deletes those cookies. Your choice itself is kept in your browser's local storage. The app itself uses no analytics.

We have Google signals turned on. If you accept and you're signed in to a Google account with ad personalization on, Google may associate your visits with that account to give us aggregated reports, such as age range, interests and how many people visit from more than one device. We never see who you are, the site shows no ads, and we don't use this for advertising. You control this in your Google account (Data & privacy, Ad settings) as well as with our Cookie settings. More in how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Problem reports

When you use Report a Problem, we get your description. If you're signed in, it comes from your account's address; if you're signed out, we get an e-mail address only if you type one.

Who else is involved

  • Our hosting and database providers store the data above for us.
  • An e-mail service sends password reset codes and FocusChat invitations.
  • Google Play handles purchases.

None of them may use your data for anything else.

How long we keep it, and deleting it

Your account, save and FocusChat data are kept until you delete your account. Deleting it removes them for good: in the app (Settings, Account, Delete Account) or on the delete account page. Problem reports are kept until the problem is dealt with. Purchase records are deleted with your account; Google Play keeps its own order records under its terms.

Children

Focus98 isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly keep data about them.
